FORMULA 1 STREET CIRCUITS
A street circuit is a collection of public roads that are closed off for the purpose of a racing event. Using that definition, there are five street circuits in F1 today: Monaco, Singapore, Sochi, Melbourne, and Montreal.
Explore them all!
Circuit de Monaco
The Circuit de Monaco had its first Grand Prix in 1950 hosted on the streets of Monte Carlo, with a lap record of 1:12.909 set by Lewis Hamilton in 2021. It is undeniably the most famous track of Formula 1 history and remains one of the most difficult to maneuver with sharp corners and hairpin turns.
Elevation Profile
Monaco is the only street circuit to have the smallest length and major ups and downs. The circuit lays at 3.337 kilometers with 42 meters of elevation change. It has a total of 19 turns, with the highest point sitting at 89.5 meters along Casino Square (Turn 4).
Marina Bay Street Circuit
The Marina Bay Street Circuit had its first Grand Prix in 2008 hosted on the streets of Downtown Core and Kallang, with a lap record of 1:41.905 set by Kevin Magnussen in 2018. The Singapore track has an interesting layout, making it the most stress enduring race of the season for both drivers and teams due to the bumpy street surface and humid conditions.
Elevation Profile
Singapore's circuit is mainly flat with a total of 23 turns, the most turns of all the street circuits. It lays at 5.063 kilometers with 5.3 meters of elevation change.
Sochi Autodrom
The Sochi Autodrom had its first Grand Prix in 2014 hosted in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, with a lap record of 1:35.761 set by Lewis Hamilton in 2019. A famous location that most may remember, the Russian track evolved out of the internal roads of the park built for the city's Winter Olympics in 2014.
Elevation Profile
Sochi's circuit is mainly flat with a total of 18 turns and lays at 5.848 kilometers with 1.9 meters of elevation change. The drivers face an epic Turn 3, a 750m constant-radius left-hander while the rest of the track is characterised by a series of 90-degree bends.
Albert Park Circuit
The Albert Park Circuit had its first Grand Prix in 1996 hosted around Albert Park Lake, three kilometers south of central Melbourne, with a lap record of 1:20.260 set by Charles Leclerc in 2022. Melbourne is also one of the faster tracks on the calendar, with Lewis Hamilton's 2019 lap set at an average of over 146 miles per hour.
Elevation Profile
Melbourne's circuit is mainly flat with a total of 14 turns and lays at 5.278 kilometers with 2.6 meters of elevation change. There are only 2.6 meters between the highest point (approaching Turn 13) and the lowest point on the start-finish straight at 7.5 meters.
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve had its first Grand Prix in 1978 named after Québec Formula 1 driving legend Gilles Villeneuve, which reflects his aggressive and technical driving style. The Montreal circuit has a lap record of 1:13.078 set by Valtteri Bottas in 2019.
Elevation Profile
Montreal's circuit is mainly flat with a total of 14 turns and lays at 4.361 kilometers with 5.2 meters of elevation change. The fast, low-downforce circuit is one of the drivers' favorites, since the track is quite stop-start, with the famous hairpin turn that surrounds the grandstand for fans to experience in real-time.
